Nacho Picasso is the Organic Choice for #1 Freshest in the Northwest

    by  • July 18, 2013 • Freshest in the Northwest • 0 Comments

Nacho PicassoCompared to everyone else, 2013 thus far has been a clear battle for #1 Freshest in the Northwest between Sam Lachow and Nacho Picasso. After a long debate it was the question of who hit harder in the Northwest and Nacho was named this year’s #1. Sam Lachow has been on national tours, released an EP called 5 Good Reasons with Raz Simone, and plans a new EP later this July. On the other hand, Nacho Picasso has done more local shows and an EP called Vampsterdam with last year’s #7 Avatar Darko. Clearly, the two are just as big as each other but for completely different reasons. When D-Money introduced both artists at the same time the panel was instantly split, so he made them review the criteria to make the right choice.

    Sam Lachow

The criteria for Freshest in the Northwest are impact, lyrics, buzz, and style in the last 6-8 months. With impact the panel was still split with Q mentioning that Nacho is “here” more and Sermon adding “and when he’s here you know he’s here.” Then, Swervewon countered that Sam has that Mac Miller quality that when he shows up in the park 20 people instantly gather. Nacho got the push when it came to lyrics based on his originality in his bars while M-Pyre applauded Sam’s melodies, cadences, producing, and camera skills while explaining that lyrics may not be his strong suit. Nacho Picasso is a rapper’s rapper while Sam Lachow is a better artist. The comparisons continued when this year’s #0 artist Macklemore came up yet again. Before taking over the industry, Mack toured all the time and was applauded as an excellent songwriter much like the very same qualities the panel said they loved about Sam Lachow. With label’s looking his or this year’s #6 Sol’s way as a possible “next Macklemore” it appears the national media will favor Sam Lachow. When talking about buzz, Mac Smiff brought out that Nacho Picasso hits only in the Northwest while Sam Lachow holds more national appeal.

Q Dot summed up the whole debate between Nacho and Sam that it’s all apples and oranges and that their both fruit and eating off it. Following it up, Luvva J asked “Which fruit is more organic?” The question instantly swayed everyone on the panel because even though Sam’s buzz hits nationally more, Nacho Picasso is a pure Northwest product. D-Money asked for a final vote and it was unanimous that 2013’s Freshest in the Northwest title goes to Nacho Picasso! Do you agree with the decision on Nacho Picasso for #1? Sound off and debate it on Twitter and Facebook with the hashtag #FreshestintheNW.

Cassow Mania Explodes at #3 Freshest in the Northwest

    by  • July 17, 2013 • Freshest in the Northwest • 0 Comments

With an almost cult like following, Cassow is starting to become unavoidable, and this year the Portland artist finds himself in the Top 5 Freshest in the Northwest at #3. Earlier this year, his critically acclaimed mixtape, Cold Winter, produced features from Danny Brown and Smoke DZA and production from Hippie Sabotage, Reignstate, and in-house producer Trox. A steady stream of videos has followed and his ability to draw crowds in Portland is a strong reflection of our #5 Tacoma artist Clemm Rishad. Cassow (Caz-So), despite D-Money’s inability to say his name correctly, is a name that consistently changes the fortunes of a show as Mac Smiff said there may be 10 people there and then Cassow shows up with 40 cars later and the place is packed.

The rapper’s reach goes far beyond the Northwest as just like fellow PDX rapper Luck-One he sees coverage in all the major blocks and has even seen looks from XXL. The result is that Cassow comes in a solid #3 for this year and may very well challenge for #1 next year. Speaking of tomorrow, we’re going to drop #1 & #2 both on you at the same damn time! Tomorrow, its time to wrap up this list with the two artists that dominated all of the panel’s lists and your fan votes, when we will decide who will be 2013′s #1 and #2 artists! Sound off who you think is the #1 Freshest in the Northwest on Twitter and Facebook with the hashtag #FreshestintheNW. Yeah go ahead and do that!

Luck-One the King is #4 Freshest in the Northwest

    by  • July 16, 2013 • Freshest in the Northwest • 0 Comments

Luck-OneWith the audacity to call himself the King of the Northwest, a rapper better be a mean lyricist on the mic. Luck-One enters this year’s Freshest in the Northwest list at #4 with an impassioned declaration from Mac Smiff that he may just be the best rapper on the whole west coast outside of Kendrick Lamar. Following a theme of some of the artists that have landed on the list thus far such as Sol, J. Pinder, and Neema, the NE Portland artist had very little music to consider in the past 6-8 months, but still his impact can be described as unheard of.

After winding down the buzz over his last collaboration EP with singer Dizz called Critical Mass, a quiet period was had from Luck before he hit the net and the streets with “Strange Fruit.” It was the first thing to be heard from Luck for months outside of a rare MTV RapFix interview and it resonated with all the major blogs, radio stations, and the social networks. Luck is back and is working on his next project which will follow up the bold title from last year and will be called King of the Northwest II: The Curse of the Pharaoh. Mystery always seems to surround Luck-One and its probably why he’s always been an industry favorite and this year he’s a sold addition to our top 5! Should Clemm Rishad have passed Luck-One for #4 because of the lack of activity or are you happy with their rankings? Who is your top 3? Sound off on Twitter and Facebook with the hashtag #FreshestintheNW

    Watch it at http://youtu.be/Iz2GdirH-e0

There’s only 3 names left & we’ll reveal #3 tomorrow! Stay tuned for the whole TV special on Seattle Community Media coming soon!
